Ubuthakathi activations to promote #BoozeFreeRoads

13 December 2016

Safely Home will be targeting pedestrians at various hot spots across the Western Cape this festive season through a number of road safety awareness activations. These activation events support the Ubuthakathi campaign that was launched earlier this month under the theme “alcohol and roads don’t mix”.

More than 600 pedestrians are killed on Western Cape roads every year. Alcohol is a constant danger on the province’s roads and is claiming the lives of hundreds of our young men in the prime of their lives, whether they are drinking and driving, or walking on busy roads when they are incapacitated. Road death statistics show that black African and coloured males aged 19-29 years are most at risk.

The activations will be exposing the dangers of drinking and walking on the roads by way of impactful street theatre. Actors made up to look like the pedestrian hit by a car in the Ubuthakathi television commercial will stagger into pedestrian traffic saying they have just been hit by a car and did not mean to walk in the road after drinking. The actors will appear to have real wounds.

Safely Home and road safety agencies that support this campaign are hoping to use these activations to make both drivers and pedestrians think about the negative impacts of alcohol on judgement, and the hazards of mixing alcohol and roads.
