Transport and Public Works MEC to Sign Ten Year Lease for Philipi Stadium

18 August 2010

The Minister of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle will today sign a ten year lease for the management of Phillipi Stadium with the CEO of Chipcor Construction (Pty) Ltd Mr. Siviwe Mpengesi. Under the lease agreement Chipcor will be responsible for the implementation of community football development initiatives, as well as maintaining the pitch and the physical infrastructure in and around the stadium.

Philippi Stadium is situated in one of the most disadvantaged communities in Cape Town. The stadium served as an official training site during the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup. The Uruguay national team held two of its practice sessions at the stadium during the World Cup.

The stadium accommodates three thousand (3000) spectators. The site was upgraded for R54 million as part of the 2010 FIFA World Cup legacy by the Provincial Government of the Western Cape. The upgrade included the building of change rooms with ablution facilities, a media facility and an operational area for security services.
