Traffic Service Clamp Down on Drunk Drivers

At roadblocks held in Fish Hoek on Friday 13 August, twenty (20) people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The following night, Saturday 14 August, twenty four (24) motorists were arrested and a further fifty seven (57) fines issued for traffic-related offences at roadblocks in Nyanga.

In a separate operation on Friday evening, City Traffic's Technical Services Unit, in conjunction with Provincial Traffic Services stopped four hundred and seventeen (417) vehicles on Okavango Road in Brackenfell. Officers arrested sixteen (16) drunk drivers, one person for possession of drugs (Tik), and one taxi driver for not having the relevant permit.

Officers charged a further thirty eight (38) unlicensed drivers, twenty eight (28) drivers for failing to carry their driver's licences, and issued sixty six (66) other fines.

Meanwhile, during speed checks conducted on Klipfontein Road in Athlone, three hundred and twenty (320) speeding fines were recorded. The highest reading recorded a motorist travelling at a speed of one hundred and twenty seven kilometres per hour (127km/h) in a sixty kilometre per hour (60 km/h) zone. On Okavango Road opposite Cape Gate, another one hundred and sixty eight (168) fines were recorded, with the highest speed registering one hundred and thirty five kilometres per hour (135km/h).

"City Traffic Officers will continue to be relentless in their efforts to carry out our campaign to rid the streets of drunk drivers," said media spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services, Chief Inspector Merle Lourens.
