Six Pedestrians Die On Western Cape Roads Past Weekend

Ten (10) fatalities were reported this weekend:

Greater Cape Metropole:

  • Bothasig – 1 x Pedestrian
  • Gordons Bay – 1 x Motorcyclist
  • Mitchells Plain – 1 x  Pedestrian
  • Observatory – 1 x Pedestrian
  • Parow – 1 x Driver
  • Maitland – 1 x Passenger
  • Bothasig – 1 x Pedestrian
  • Phillippi – 1 x Pedestrian

Eden/Central Karoo:

  • Knysna – 1 x  Pedestrian

Winelands/Overberg:

  • Paarl East – 1 x Driver

This weekend’s (3 and 4 October 2014) 25 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 666 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.

A total of 1 243 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 23 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Somerset West at 1.34 mg/1 000 ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000ml.

A total of 10 983 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 938 speeding offences were recorded.  Three hundred and twenty three (323) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 463 600.

The Highest Speeds Recorded:

  • 182 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 141 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Swellendam service area.
  • 97 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N2 in the Somerset West area.

Other Arrests: Four

  • 1 x False Documentation Arrest (Somerset West).
  • 1 x Dagga Arrest (Brackenfell).
  • 1 x Reckless And Negligent Arrest (Somerset West).
  • 1 x False Documentation Arrest (Vredenburg).
