Safe Roads, Safe Children on Human Rights Day

20 March 2015

The Department of Transport and Public Works will celebrate Human Rights Day with a Fun Walk event aimed at addessing pedestrian safety, especially among children. The event will take place at the Mbekweni Primary School in Paarl on 21 March 2015.

Learners from three primary schools in the area are expected to participate in the event. Including various demonstrations on road safety practices, the event will further place the focus on children as the most likely ones to be killed in pedestrian accidents. Because they are shorter than adults, they are most likely to be struck in the head or chest.

The event will also include motivational talks from representatives of South African Police Service (SAPS), Western Cape Department of Social Development and Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).

The Department appeals to members of the public to keep themselves safe and model good pedestrian behaviour for children so that they learn good habits. With their help, the Department can effectively reduce the risk of pedestrian injuries and deaths among children.
