SA Elite Amateur Boxing Returns to Cape Town

28 June 2012

Amateur male and female boxers across the country will be geared up and ready for the 2012 SANABO Elite Boxing Championships, to take place at the Western Cape Sports School in Nooiensfontein, Kuils River in Cape Town.

The championship will run from 4-7 July 2012 from 12:00 to 19:00.

The South African National Boxing Organisation (SANABO), in conjunction with the Department of Cultural Affairs and the City of Cape Town will host this year's event. Over the years, the Western Cape has successfully hosted four junior and senior championships - in Kuils River, Belhar (2002), Oudtshoorn (2006) and Khayelitsha (2010).

The championship has already produced many boxers who have competed in major boxing events elsewhere in Africa and Europe. Two well-known boxers in the boxing fraternity will also be involved in this championship. Mzonke Fana, a professional boxer, is expected to motivate and encourage the boxers, while Sinethemba Bam, a highly-rated amateur boxer, will compete again this year.

This year's tournament will also see the female boxers compete for the first time in three divisions - featherweight, lightweight and middleweight. During 2011 female boxers competed for the very first time at a national event. The 2011 winners in the three Olympic weight divisions represented South Africa at the 2012 Women World Championships in China.

A national team is being selected to participate in major events and these boxers will have their sights on competing in international games such as the Commonwealth and Olympics Games.

Amateur boxing is one of few sports that matches up athletes based on their age, weight and experience. This championship will be electrifying and it is expected to draw hundreds of people. The organisers are very excited and hope that the citizens of the Western Cape will enjoy the next generation of boxing stars.

Boxing has a long history and tradition in the Western Cape and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and its partners are keen to be supporting an exciting c

hampionship in a province that creates opportunities for people through sport.
