R50 000 Reward for Information on Cop Killers | Western Cape Government

R50 000 Reward for Information on Cop Killers

5 August 2013

Media Release by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety

No amount of money can make up for the loss of a life, and no amount of money will provide comfort to the family, friends and colleagues of the police officers killed in recent weeks. But it is my hope that by offering a reward that someone, somewhere, will come forward and help the police catch the cowardly criminals responsible for these terrible acts.
Every society has a criminal element and these cowardly criminals have killed the people that have chosen to dedicate their lives to protecting the people of South Africa.
Dr Gilbert Lawrence, the Head of Department for the Department of Community Safety in the Western Cape, has agreed to make available R50 000 to any person or persons for information that will result in the arrest and the successful prosecution of anyone involved in the killing of police officers in the Western Cape. The awarding of this reward will be at the sole discretion of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Any information should be reported to the SAPS Crime Stop number on 0861 10111.
The Western Cape Government has no operational control over the police; we only have an oversight role. I have always supported our hard-working men and women in blue and we work with the police to ensure that they are more efficient and that they provide the best possible service to the people of the Western Cape.
The Provincial Commissioner, General Arno Lamoer, and myself have disagreed on matters before and we might disagree on more issues in the future – but there is no doubt that we both agree on this – we will not tolerate our police officers being killed. We will not allow cowardly criminals to get away with their crimes unpunished, and we will do everything in our power to ensure the safety of both the people of the Western Cape and our police officers – the Western Cape SAPS are fully aware of this and support this initiative.
It is only through a whole-of-society approach that we can make our communities safer. I urge the public to work with us and help us restore law and order so that our police officers can go about their duties and continue to protect you, the citizen, from harm.
By working better together we can be safer together.
