Provincial Police Commissioner Must Provide Answers to Allegations

28 October 2013

Response by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety

Following media reports that a senior Western Cape SAPS official is being investigated by the Hawks for allegedly accepting bribes from a top gang leader, I will be asking Western Cape Police Commissioner, General Arno Lamoer to respond to these allegations as a matter of urgency.

With the highest number of drug crimes and rampant gang violence on the Cape Flats, it is a crime of the highest order to have police colluding with gangs.

General Lamoer must respond immediately to these allegations, decisive action is needed to maintain the trust of the public, many of whom are victims of gang violence in this province. It is inconceivable that a senior SAPS officer is involved in these kinds of allegations, especially in a province so acutely affected by gangs and drugs.
