Oudtshoorn Festival to Promote Sport in the Southern Cape

20 June 2012

Many athletes are expected to participate in the Oudtshoorn Sport Festival which will run from 21 June until 1 July 2012 in this beautiful Klein Karoo town.

This festival is an annual event hosted by the Oudtshoorn Municipality in conjunction with the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Oudtshoorn Sport Council, regional and provincial sport federations and their sponsors, PetroSA and Standard Bank.

Since its inception in 2010, this festival has grown immensely. Local, regional and provincial sport teams of various sport codes will again take part in local, regional and inter-provincial competitions.

This sports tourism event will focus on youth, social development, job creation and transformation in line with the aim of the municipality to promote Greater Oudtshoorn as the preferred sport destination of the Southern Cape. The area has hosted various major sport events over the past few years and sport federations and organisations in the region are expected to benefit from the festival.

The event was launched on Friday, 15 June 2012 at the Survul Boutique Olive Estate. The Deputy Director of Sport and Recreation at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Mr Bennet Bailey, thanked the host town and its partners for supporting the emergence of an active nation and expressed the hope that this festival will establish Oudtshoorn as the high performance sports capital of South Africa.

The town's moderate winter climate makes it a perfect destination for sport events at this time of year. The Oudtshoorn Sport Festival is a celebration of South Africa's status as a winning sports nation.
