Nineteen Arrested for Drinking and Driving on Western Cape Roads

On 13 and 14 March 2015, 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 548 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign. Fifteen people, eight of whom were pedestrians, died on the province’s roads.

A total of 1 127 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 19 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Brackenfell at 1.34 mg/1 000 ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 608 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 29 speeding offences were recorded.

A total of 263 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 330 650.

Highest Speeds

  • 145 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Beaufort West service area.
  • 96 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N1 in the Worcester service area.
  • 112 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna service area.
  • 80 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna service area.

Three (3) Other Arrests

  • Two (2) for hindering traffic officer in execution of duties (Somerset West).
  • One (1) for assault (Beaufort West).
