Minister Madikizela extends condolences to CATA following death of leader

8 April 2021

Media Release by Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape Minister of Transport and Public Works

I am shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of the President of the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA), Mr Victor Wiwi.

Mr Wiwi and two others were shot while travelling in the direction of Nyanga last night. He later died in hospital.

This incident happened about two hours after Mr Wiwi called and briefed me about a meeting he attended with the Laingsburg Municipality yesterday.

I call on CATA leaders and its members to remain calm and to allow the police to do their work. We need to get to the bottom of taxi related killings in our province. I will also visit the family of Mr Wiwi and the other victims on Saturday to give my personal condolences. I urge SAPS to prioritise this case.

As part of my continued effort to end the current spate of taxi violence in the  province, I have called an urgent meeting with the leadership of the SANTACO.

Mr Wiwi was a respected and soft spoken leader who demonstrated his dedication towards making peace and ending violence.

I extend my sincere condolences to the families, to the members of CATA and to the colleagues in the broader taxi industry.

May his soul Rest in Peace.
