Minister Madikizela Delivers Houses to Rondevlei Beneficiaries

26 August 2014

On Friday, 22 August a jubilant crowd gathered to welcome Western Cape Human Settlements Minister Madikizela to a ceremonial handover of four houses to deserving beneficiaries in Rondevlei, Lavender Hill.

The four houses form part of the Rondevlei Peoples Housing Project (PHP) that on completion will render 225 units at a cost of approximately R35 million.

The PHP is a strategic focus of the Western Cape Government, where communities become empowered due to their participation in the project management and development process, rather than being passive recipients of housing opportunities. To qualify, beneficiaries need to be South African citizens, not have previously benefitted from a State subsidy, and also earn less than R3 500 per month.

In his keynote address the Minister urged beneficiaries to remain involved in maintaining their new homes and the general upliftment of the Rondevlei community. “I am so encouraged to be witnessing firsthand the amazing spirit amongst you.  It is clear you take pride in your community and a lot of hard work has gone into it.  It is people like you we should be rewarding. Deserving beneficiaries who have upheld the law and exercised patience and restraint, despite the many obstacles and challenges you have faced,” said the Minister.

This sentiment was echoed by beneficiary, Ronald Smith, who after being on the Housing Demand Data Base since 1988 could not contain his delight at finally receiving the keys to his first home.  “I feel like I’m in heaven.  My family can look up to me now with new pride as the head of a real house.  One made of bricks and mortar, where my wife and kids can look forward to a promising future,” an emotional Smith stated.

The celebrations fittingly came to an end amidst joyous song and dance, in which Minister Madikizela and City of Cape Town Human Settlements Councillor James Slabbert were only too happy to join.
