Minister Bredell's Statement on the Andile Lili Judgment

29 November 2013

Media Statement by Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Anton Bredell

The Western Cape Government welcomes the judgment by Judge Le Grange in the matter between Andile Lili and the Independent Electoral Commission and Others.

I also welcome the Court’s decision that discipline must be enforced where there is a transgression of the Code of Conduct for Councillors.

I quote from the judgment:
“[87] In my view having regard to the above considerations, the conclusion by the MEC was in fact justified. There was nothing in the Applicant’s representation to persuade the MEC that any other sanction was appropriate.”

It is not easy to determine the fate of a person’s future, but if councillors transgress the Code of Conduct, they need to be aware that they will be disciplined.
