Media Alert: EMS Rescue Calls - 14 and 15 November 2011

Monday, 14 November 2011 - At 15:36 on Silverly Road, Wynberg - A 24-year-old male was in a critical condition after a wall on a construction site collapsed. According to rescue technicians that responded to the incident, workers on the site were building a trench when one side of the wall collapsed, only injuring one. The patient sustained fractures from the waist down. He was transported to Vincent Palotti Hospital.

Tuesday, 15 November 2011 - At 05:05 on the N1 near Beaufort West - Twenty people were declared dead on arrival after a head-on collision between two taxis and a truck. According to the EMS incident commander, the truck was stationary when both taxis collided after each other.

  • Twenty patients - Six adult males, two male children and 12 adult females were declared dead on arrival by EMS personnel who responded to the scene.
  • Two adult males were coded critical. The one male sustained a serious concussion and fractures to both ankles. The second patient sustained fractures to the leg and foot. They were transported to Lainsberg and Beauford West hospitals.
  • Two adult females and two adult males sustained serious injuries of swelling to the forehead, laceration to the eyes and upper body fractures. The patients were transported to Prince Albert, Lainsberg and Beauford West hospitals.
  • Five adults (three males and two females) and three children (two boys and one girl) sustained minor bruises, lacerations and abrasions. They were transported to Prince Albert Hospital.
