Media Alert: The Chess Revolution is Coming Home this Weekend

9 May 2014

The Steinitz Chess Club will be hosting a Grandmaster event at Curro Primary School in Century City from 9 to 18 May 2014. The event is supported by Chess Western Province, Chess Western Cape, Chess South Africa, the Kasparov Chess Foundation and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS). The event forms part of the Steinitz Chess Club 37th Anniversary Chess Festival.

Over 279 chess players are expected to participate in the festival. The event will also boast grandmasters (GMs) from Serbia, Spain, Belarus, Uganda, Bangladesh and South Africa. The chief arbiter for the tournament is International Arbiter (IA) Gunther van der Berg and the chief organiser is Mark Lewis, president of Steinitz Chess Club.

Local International Master (IM) Kenny Solomon will be spearheading the Western Province contingent after winning the Capablanca Grandmaster section last week in Pretoria. Solomon has completed three Grandmaster norms and will be hoping to build on his success. Current South African male chess champion Donovan van Den Heever will be competing together with his fellow Olympic qualifiers IMs David Gluckman and Henry Steel.

The opening event will take place at 17:30 on Friday, 9 May 2014.
