Macassar Dunes Nature Reserve to host Weed Buster Week Programme for Learners

30 September 2009
A Weed Buster Week Programme will be hosted by Macassar Dunes Nature Reserve and its partners at the reserve from Tuesday 6 to Friday 9 October 2009.

This is an annual event where approximately 216 primary school learners from Khayelitsha and Macassar, particularly those closest to the reserve, visit the reserve over a four day period for various activities and lessons.

The City of Cape Town Biodiversity Management Branch's Nature Conservation staff, partners and volunteers present the activities and lessons.

The main aim of this programme is to educate teachers and learners about the invasive alien species found in the nature reserve and in their communities and the effects that these species have on biodiversity. The participants will also be shown how to eradicate them. We hope that the knowledge gained will create a love for nature and a healthy environment.

Participating organisations include Cape Flats Nature, Lifeline Project and the Macassar Dunes Co-Management Association.

Members of the media are welcome to join us at this event and become a communication partner in this important development project.

Programme:
Date: 6 - 9 October 2009
Time: 09:00 - 14:00
Place: Macassar Waste Water Treatment Works, off Macassar Road, second right turn-off, opposite Macassar Community
