Macassar Dunes Nature Reserve Host Heritage Week Programme

15 September 2010

The Macassar Dunes Nature Reserve and various partners, including the Macassar Dunes Co-management Association (MDCA), will host a Heritage Week programme at the reserve, from 20 - 24 September 2010.

As part of the City's Youth Environmental School (YES) programme, the reserve will host 240 primary school learners from Macassar, Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain for activities and lessons over four days, from 20 - 23 September.

The reserve is home to a diverse selection of animal and plant species and learners will enjoy some bird-watching before taking a short hike from the Macassar Wastewater Treatment Works, past Eerste River, through the Milkwood trees and on to the dunes. During the hike they will learn about the area's natural heritage and how to preserve it, as well as the negative effects that illegal activities have on the environment and the importance of preserving it.

On the final day of the programme, 24 September, 100 participants from the three communities surrounding the nature reserve will take part in an overnight programme. The City's Nature Conservation staff members, community partners and volunteers will host various activities and lessons.

The main aim of the Heritage Week programme is the sharing of knowledge and information with communities, focusing on the significance of their surrounding natural resources and heritage. This programme will also strengthen the partnership between the nature reserve, surrounding communities and other local organisations and it is hoped that it will encourage residents to protect the dunes and become the most passionate conservators for the area.

Media are welcome to join us at this event and become a communication partner for this important development project.
