Human Rights Day Event in Mitchells Plain

20 March 2014

Human Rights Day will be celebrated with a multi-code sports festival and 5km fun walk at the Portlands Indoor Centre and Sport Fields in Mitchells Plain on 21 and 22 March 2014.

The event will mainly focus on women and girls’ sport development. It will be hosted by Making An Impact Through Sport (MITS), supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), City of Cape Town, Coaching For Hope and others. Youths from Mitchells Plain, Langa, Hout Bay, Strand, Fish hoek and Atlantis are expected to participate in the festival.

On 21 March, the event will start with a 5km fun walk for festival participants (free of charge) and members from the public (R20 per person). It will be followed by stage activities that will include a bodybuilding demonstration, singing, dancing and public aerobics by Zone Fitness Mitchells Plain and Lovelife. A number of lucky draw prizes will be up for grabs. Other events will include u14 girl’s football, u18 girl’s football tournaments as well as table tennis, basketball and Thru Opportunity Comes Success (TOCS) rugby.

On 22 March, u14 and u18 girls’ football players are expected to play for top honours in the knockout matches. Prizes will be handed out to the winners. The partners hope this festival will help them to continue their development of the girls in sport project in Mitchells Plain, Atlantis and surrounding areas. It will also promote support for the newly established Mitchells Plain Basketball club based at the Portlands Indoor Centre.
