Good progress with reconstruction of Chrysalis Academy bush camp

The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) is making good progress with building four bush camp chalets and a main hall at the Chrysalis Academy, Tokai. This R6 million project commissioned for the provincial Department of Community Safety commenced in January 2018 and is expected to be complete in November this year.

The project replaces the Chrysalis bush camp which was destroyed during the Cape Peninsula wildfires of 2015. The existing rugby field was identified as the most suitable area for the project. Once completed, the new bush camp will be used for teambuilding or as a retreat for Chrysalis students, other schools, corporate users, or private users. The hall facility will be able to accommodate 40 people with a full kitchen and shared ablution facilities. Each chalet can accommodate up to eight people.

Additional chalets could be built at the site in future, budget permitting. The access road to the chalets will be reinstated by the DTPW road maintenance component through another contract after the construction of the bush camp is complete.

To date, the number of permanent staff employed by the contractor is 15, and there have been 18 short-term employment opportunities for local persons residing in the City of Cape Town municipal area.
