Good progress on improvements at Khayelitsha Hospital

13 December 2016

The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) is making good progress with alterations and upgrades at Khayelitsha Hospital. The third floor of the ward block is being developed into a new 30-bed surgical ward.

At the time of construction, this floor was left as an empty shell for later development. In addition, the X-ray unit facilities have been improved and the hospital’s first CT (computed tomography) X-ray scanner is being installed.

This R19 million project was commissioned by DTPW for the Western Cape Department of Health. Construction started in May 2016 and is expected to have been completed in January 2017.

DTPW is committed to creating short-term Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) employment and skills training opportunities. A total of R1,1 million is expected to go towards targeted enterprises, R817 000 towards suppliers and local labour, and R760 000 towards local labour from the City of Cape Town municipal area.

The Western Cape Government’s Provincial Strategic Goal 1 aims to improve wellness in the province. By delivering quality health facilities, on time, where they are needed most, DTPW is living its mission of delivering infrastructure and services to promote positive socio-economic outcomes and safe, empowered and connected communities.
