EMS Alert: Motor Vehicle Accident on Buitengracht Street, Cape Town

Western Cape Government Health's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a motor vehicle accident in the Cape Town CBD on 9 September 2012.

At 13:30 on Buitengracht Street, Cape Town - In a head-on collision between two cars (a Toyota and a Mini Cooper), EMS rescuers had to rapidly extricate patients trapped in the front section of the Toyota using the Jaws of Life.

One driver and four passengers were travelling in the Toyota (one adult male, three adult females and one child approximately eight months).

  • The driver, a male adult and a female passenger sustained chest and head injuries. They were coded critical by EMS paramedics.
  • One female adult passenger who was seated at the back of the vehicle had no visible signs of injuries but was coded serious by EMS practitioners.
  • One female adult and the child were unharmed and did not require further medical attention.

All patients were transported to Groote Schuur Hospital by EMS ambulance and ER24.

The driver of the Mini Cooper refused transport to a medical facility.
