DCAS supports IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Cape Town

The Minister of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais officially congratulated the Western Cape players who were selected to represent South Africa at the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division III on 12 April 2018. The world championships will take place at the Grand West Ice Station in Goodwood from 16 to 22 April 2018.

Teams from South Africa, Turkey, Bulgaria, Georgia, Hong Kong and the Chinese Taipei will take part in the fast-paced and action-packed championships.

There are seven Western Cape players in the 18 player-strong national team.

These players are:

  • Uthmaan Samaai: Forward
  • Dean Magmoed: Defence
  • Marc Giot: Forward
  • Jean-Michel Van Doesburgh: Forward
  • Keenen Gordon: Defence
  • Luke Carelse: Forward
  • Alex Obery: Forward

During the meet and greet engagement, Minister Marais said, “The players hailing from the Western Cape have always done us proud at the Championships. There is no doubt in my mind that they will do so again this year as Team SA is well-prepared to compete against the world. With the Commonwealth Games currently underway, we have seen that when athletes don our green and gold on the world stage, the whole country is united in support of our national team and a renewed sense of being proudly South African is ignited”.
