Dancing Together in Indaba

30 August 2012

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport will be dancing with dancers from the West Coast and Central Karoo in the African Hip Hop Indaba from 31 August to 1 September 2012. This year, the department has partnered with the Heal the World Project to invest in youth by hosting a variety of dance workshops in these regions.

The workshops created awareness about the history of and various styles of hip hop, and to express the unique culture of the hip hop genre. Competitions took place in Saldanha Bay (10 August 2012) and Beaufort West (11 August 2012), where the best dance crews and dancers were selected to compete in the 2012 Indaba.

Dancers from Central Karoo will compete for the first time in this year's event. Versatile (group winners), Colin Duimpies (popping) and Christiaan Adams (krump) will line up against the very best dancers from around the Western Cape and South Africa. The group winners from Saldanha Bay, TK EXPLOSIVES, as well as Rupert Makka, Chadwin Cook and Bronwin Papier (all Afrikaans rappers) will represent the West Coast.

The department believes that the West Coast and Central Karoo regions can benefit from dance and music. Mr Adrian Kearns of the Arts and Culture directorate said it was evident that the workshops have made a visible impact on these dancers and on their communities. "The workshops were well attended and these dancers are grateful to compete in the indaba," he said.

Through their meaningful partnership, the department and Heal the World Project have created a perfect platform for these dancers and artists to showcase their talent at the biggest event on the South African hip hop calendar.
