Cricket Gains Popularity in Townships

21 September 2012

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, the JAG Sport and Education Foundation and JAG Western Province Cricket is developing young cricket players and, in the process, keeping them off the streets in townships.

The 5th African Black Township Talent Identification u12 cricket tournament will take place from 22 to 24 September 2012. Eight matches will be played in Khayelitsha and Langa, while Gugulethu will host two. Teams from Du Noon, Belhar, Gugulethu, Heideveld, Langa, Lwandle, Nyanga, Mandalay, Masiphumelele, Mfuleni, Philipi, Sherwood and Samora Machel will all take part.

Each team will play two Pro20 matches per day. The Township Academy will then select a team from these players to compete in a cricket development tournament in Worcester later this year. The Township Team will also be coached twice a month and play friendly matches against top cricket teams such as Bishops, Rondebosch, Wynberg, SACS and other academies.

Ms Nonceba Mpashe of the Club Development: Sport Promotion directorate says the aim is to see the Township Team play in the Western Province Premier Cricket League one day.

The department and its partners are promoting cricket in townships through mass participation, and they ensure that the sport gains popularity in these communities.
