Cop killers’ Convictions Welcomed

2 December 2015

Statement by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety

I welcome the conviction of two men found guilty yesterday of the murder of two South African Police Service (SAPS) officers in Nyanga earlier this year.

Though the convictions are still little comfort to the family, friends and colleagues of the officers who lost their lives, the convictions prove that those responsible for heinous attacks on our men and women in blue will not get away with their crimes.

I trust that the sentencing to be handed down today will at the very least match the severity of their crimes.

Any person who dares to contemplate or execute violent or deadly attacks on law enforcement officials need to know that they will be met with the full reach and force of the entire criminal justice system.

The Western Cape Government condemns cop killings. While we have no operational control over SAPS, our government is committed to supporting the hard working police men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect others.

The Department of Community Safety’s R50 000 reward still stands. The reward is open to anyone who can assist with information that will result in the arrest and the successful conviction of those involved in the killing of police officers in the Western Cape.

It has to be remembered that only a select few in our society are responsible for these crimes. That is why I reiterate my call for everyone in the province to help safeguard our police officers in our communities as they carry their service to us.
