City Road Closures for the Switch on of the Festive Lights

22 November 2010

Cape Town's largest public open-air event, the official switching on of the Adderley Street festive lights, takes place this Sunday, November 28, at the Cape Town station forecourt. In preparation for crowds of spectators, which in the past has amounted to over 100 000 people, the City of Cape Town will partially close several streets in the Central Business District (CBD) from 09:00 (9am) on Thursday, November 25 until 19:00 (7pm) on Monday, November 29.

These partial closures include the outside lane of Adderley Street, closest to the Cape Town station, from the Fountain Circle to Strand Street; and the outbound lane of Strand Street, closest to the station, from Strand to Buitenkant Street. On Sunday, November 28, no parking will be permitted in Adderley Street from 07:00 (7am) to 24:00 (midnight). Special parking areas will be made available at the Grand Parade and in Queen Victoria and Wale Streets.

Both carriageways of Adderley Street and Heerengracht will be closed between Bureau Street and Hertzog Boulevard from 10:00 (10am) to 24:00 (midnight). All side streets leading to Adderley will also be closed. Festivities kick off on Sunday afternoon with a concert from 16:00 (4pm) to 20:00 (8pm) when Executive Mayor Dan Plato will officially switch on the festive lights.

Over five kilometres (5 km) of rope lighting were used to create the various light creations, including the six metre (6 m) high Christmas tree at the entrance to the Company Gardens. Provision has been made for medical services as well as information / lost and found facilities near the main stage at the Cape Town station forecourt. Temporary toilet facilities, including facilities for the disabled, will be available at designated locations.
