Better Together Heritage Day Celebrations

19 September 2012

Hundreds of youths from diverse communities will celebrate Heritage Day on 24 September 2012 by displaying their talents in a variety of sport, arts and cultural activities organised by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.

The department’s MOD (Mass participation, Opportunity and access, Development and growth) programme has organised events at the Hangberg Community Centre and sportsfield in Hout Bay, Lavender Hill High School and the Isiphiwo Primary School in Khayelitsha. Youths in Delft will celebrate their heritage at Leiden High School on Friday, 21 September 2012.

Indigenous games and outdoor stage plays will provide the youths with opportunities to entertain audiences in the various venues. On the sportsfield, participants will play netball, softball, touch rugby and five-a-side soccer.

The MOD programme is making a difference in the lives of Cape Town learners. By promoting sport and recreation, the department provides learners who are constantly exposed to gang violence and drug and alcohol abuse with opportunities for constructive engagement with the world.
