Better Together at First Regional Camp

4 September 2012

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA), used sport and recreation activities to bring youths between the ages of 14 and 25 together at a camp at SOS Wild in Villiersdorp from 31 August to 1 September 2012. The facilitation was done by TEST Learning Centre (TLC).

The event was the first of a series of three around the themes of social inclusion, leadership and national identity.

About 160 students from the Boland and South Western district regions attended the various workshops and sport and recreation activities. It was a fun-filled experience for most of the participants. Andile Mabusela (25), a disabled student from Worcester, thanked the department for hosting this camp. "I've really had a fun and life-changing experience as I've learnt a lot about South Africa and how diverse we are as a country. The highlight was how we all worked together as a team to reach one common goal. So everybody was a winner at the camp and everyone is able to draw a lot from this experience," he said.

Students from the West Coast and Metro regions will participate in the second camp at Waterval in Tulbagh (7 - 9 September 2012). A total of 300 students from the two regional camps will be selected for the provincial camp at the Steinthal Estate in Tulbagh (29 September - 6 October 2012). This initiative is a response to the identification last year by National Minister of Sport and Recreation, Mr Fikile Mbalula, of the need for youth camps to support the development of young people across the country.

The Department believes that bringing the youth together through sport and recreation and empowering them with values, soft skills and knowledge can help them to develop into responsible and conscious adults.
