The Best of WP Sport Crowned at Awards

26 November 2012

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport strengthened its sporting partnership with the Western Province (WP) Sport Council, City of Cape Town and various sport federations when sports stars were crowned at the Metropole Sports Awards at Barron’s Estate in Ottery on Thursday, 22 November 2012.

The Sportsman/ Sportswoman of the Year awards went to Vernon Philander of the Nashua Cape Cobras and Proteas and national canoeing star Robyn Kime (WP Canoe) of Stellenbosch for their outstanding achievements. Other prominent nominees who received awards include the Paralympic athletes, Dyan Buis (Newcomer of the Year), Charles Bouwer (Sportsman with Disability of the Year), and IIse Hayes (Sportswoman with Disability of the Year). The WP Rugby team won the Federation of the Year Award for their strong performances in the Super Rugby and Currie Cup competitions this year.

The winners were chosen from nominations received for outstanding competition sports achievements in the period 16 October 2011 to 30 September 2012 in a variety of categories. Evaluation criteria included candidates’ participation, performance and achievements at international, continental, national and provincial level. Selection panels also took into account nominees’ rankings, the types of competitions they had participated in, and whether nominees were classed as amateurs or professionals in the period under review.

Dr Dave Maralack of the WP Sport Council said this has been an incredible year on the sports field for the region. He congratulated the nominees for using sport to make a difference in communities and for doing the Western Cape proud.

Paralympian Charles Bouwer, originally from the Northern Cape, said it is important to acknowledge the achievements of sport personalities as it serves to motivate them to work harder. Tiffany Agulhus (WP Chess) from Bellville who won the School Sportswoman of the Year Award felt honoured and was clearly in high spirits. She said people should never be afraid to dream big as hard work eventually pays off. The event served to bring together sports achievers and inspire them to keep winning together.
