Athletes Making Positive Changes Recognised At Cape Winelands Sport Awards

12 December 2016

The Cape Winelands’ outstanding athletes in 2016 were honoured during the annual Cape Winelands Sport Awards ceremony at the Protea Cumberland Hotel in Worcester on 8 December. The inspiring event was hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with the Cape Winelands Sport Council and the Cape Winelands Municipality, with the Executive Mayor of the Cape Winelands District, Alderman von Schlicht, delivering the welcoming address.

The mayor acknowledged the efforts that the athletes had put in as well the personal sacrifices they had made to achieve what they had. “And thank you to everybody else for playing a role, no matter how small, in helping our sports people to achieve their goals,” said Von Schlicht.

South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) president Gideon Sam congratulated all the award recipients and highlighted the importance of supporting young athletes from a grass-roots level. “We will only be a nation of sportsmen and sportswomen if we support our children,” he said.

Dr Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of Sport for DCAS, reflected on the year’s sporting achievements and shared the vision of being a socially inclusive, creative, active and connected Western Cape. “Sport is an opportunity that allows social inclusion to take place. We as government are happy to play an enabling and facilitative role in promoting social inclusion in various communities,” said Dr Bouah, who thanked SASCOC for their assistance in promoting various sporting codes throughout the Western Cape.

Among the top achievers on the night were Ilse Hayes, who received the award for Sport Star of the Year, Marissa Rex, honoured as Sportswoman with a disability, and Caleb Josh Howard, Sportsman of the Year.

The Sport Awards acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of our sports people. Let us continue to grow and nurture our sporting talent. BETTER TOGETHER.
