Arrest of Delft Rape Suspect Welcomed

20 January 2014

Media Release by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safete

I am deeply saddened, and at the same time furious that another one of our young girls has been brutally raped, however, it is welcoming news to hear that our South African Police Service (SAPS) have already made an arrest.

I would like to applaud the members of the Delft South community who apprehended the man and handed him over to SAPS for arrest. This situation could have easily turned into one of vigilante violence and I applaud those members of the community who kept calm in a volatile situation and ensured that justice can take its course. By working with the SAPS, our communities can go a long way towards increasing the safety of their neighbourhoods and surrounding areas.

It is now up to the SAPS to ensure that there is sufficient evidence which can result in a successful prosecution and that the suspect pays for his crimes by being put behind bars away from our communities. In terms of my oversight role I will be monitoring the case and requesting updates from our watching briefs team who will be in court to monitor the proceedings.
