Visit the WCG eCentre in Bitterwater

The Bitterwater WCG eCentre is one of two Western Cape Government eCentres in Leeu-Gamka. Leeu-Gamka, a small Karoo town located 355 kilometres north-east of Cape Town lies between the Nuweveld Mountains to the north and the Swartberg to the south. It is situated on the N1 national road and the Cape Town–Kimberley railway, between Laingsburg and Beaufort-West.

In the past, Leeu-Gamka - ’Leeu‘ and ’Gamka‘ both mean ’Lion‘, in Afrikaans and ǀXam respectively - was a pitstop for prospective miners travelling from Cape Town to Kimberley to dig for diamonds. Its location next to the Leeu-Gamka River made it an ideal stop in the semi-arid Karoo.

Today, most people in Leeu-Gamka are employed as farm workers on the surrounding farms, by contractors in the bigger surrounding towns, or are part of the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP).

Many residents don’t have easy access to the internet to apply for online vacancies, complete online applications, and communicate with family or support networks in other parts of the country.

The Bitterwater WCG eCentre opened in 2016 to assist local people to communicate more effectively with government and communities worldwide. Here they free access to email, internet and various government services.

The eCentre is part of the Western Cape Government's eCentre Programme, which makes information and communication technology (ICT) freely available and accessible to communities in the Province, with a focus on rural areas where access is most needed.

The eCentre programme enables citizens to enroll in self-development and educational courses, and find employment and business opportunities, which helps fuel socio-economic development in all communities within the Western Cape.

The Bitterwater WCG eCentre offers a range of services, including:

  • Access to the internet
  • Access to email
  • Printing of up to 10 pages per person per day
  • Access to government information and services

The eCentre also provides the following accredited e-skills training courses to help build computer literacy in rural communities:

  • e-Learner Course
  • International Computer Driving License (ICDL) Course
  • Basic Computer Literate Course

The 600 monthly visitors visit to the eCentre to use its computer facilities, create email addresses, do online job applications, complete online university and college registrations, and browse the internet.

Biterwater WCG eCentre is a beacon of hope that helps make information and communication technology available and easily accessible to the people living in the community. Its staff goes out of their way to assist the community with their needs.

Alongside the in-house training, the eCentre partnered with AET (Adult Education Training) to teach community members how to use Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
