Discussion summary

  • Artists and theatre productions can be used to address social issues and topics at events such as the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees
  • It is integral for event organisers to submit their funding requests to local municipalities in time for IDP planning processes
  • Oudtshoorn Municipality promotes alternative thinking to solve the challenges faced by the event sector. They promote moving from dependency to enable individual to help themselves independently.
  • Event organisers should look for opportunities to leverage off each other. By moving an event date to coincide with another, could reduce costs.
  • To host a successful event requires a sustainable business model, whether for profit or not for profit. This requires the event organiser to establish good governance structures.
  • To attract sponsorship there needs to be alignment between an event’s objectives and that of the potential sponsor
  • An opportunity exists for the events sector in Oudtshoorn to meet regularly in order to share information and assist each other
  • Alternative funding streams to be investigated such as the Lotto or CATHSSETA
  • More service providers in Oudtshoorn should register on the Western Cape Suppliers Database and the Central Suppliers Database to be eligible to provide services for government-related procurement
  • It is important for event organisers to know who their clients and target audiences are and cater for them
  • Review your business model regularly to ensure sustainability
  • How can the event incubator programme from the Knysna Oyster Festival be replicated at other festivals in the region?
