Western Cape shines as host and secures second place at National Athletics Champs

The National Primary School Athletics Championships lit up Green Point Stadium as the Western Cape delivered an outstanding hosting performance and a powerful second-place finish.
After three action-packed days, the province celebrated an impressive 26 gold, 18 silver, and 24 bronze medals.
Among the standout performers was Liam Kriel, who produced a remarkable series of results. He claimed three gold medals and one silver medal, and he set a new South African record in the Under 13 200m hurdles. His exceptional performance earned him the title of Best Male Athlete of the Championships. Another outstanding achievement came from Nianke Fourie, who set three new South African records in the Under 12 75m hurdles, long jump and 150m hurdles events, underscoring the depth of talent within the Western Cape team. Nianke was named the best track and field athlete.
The event opened on Thursday with a lively ceremony featuring performances by Phantom Community Entertainers, Blessing Nyamayaro and Roshe Hamerslag, Rhapsody Dance Centre and the Tafelsig Drill and Marching Band. Speeches and celebrations set an upbeat tone for the competition ahead.
From Friday, the championships moved into full swing as hundreds of primary school learners took to the track and field to compete in a range of athletic events. Gauteng emerged in first place overall, while the Western Cape secured a strong second position and North-West finished in third place.
The exceptional performances of its athletes, supported by dedicated coaches and enthusiastic supporters, made the championships a proud moment for the Western Cape.
