Western Cape schools shine at National Choral Championships

6 July 2026

The Western Cape has once again demonstrated its musical excellence on the national stage, with several schools achieving outstanding results at the 2026 ABC Motsepe South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE) National Championship, held in Pretoria from 30 June to 3 July under the theme “Growth, Inclusion and Renewal in Song.”

The prestigious competition, organised by the Department of Basic Education in partnership with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the Motsepe Foundation, brought together some of the country's most talented young performers from all nine provinces.

Harry Gwala High School delivered an exceptional performance, earning two national titles. Learner Yongama Takane successfully defended her title with a score of 95% to once again secure the Solo Soprano Championship title.  The school's trio ensemble also claimed first place, highlighting the depth of musical talent nurtured at the school.

Fezeka High School also enjoyed a remarkable championship. The school's male choir won second place, demonstrating exceptional vocal skill and artistry against the country's strongest competitors. In addition, Fezeka was named runner-up in the prestigious Champ of Champs category, an accolade awarded to top-performing choirs that achieve outstanding aggregate scores at the national championships.

Another Western Cape school that delivered an outstanding performance was Nolungile Primary School, which secured third place in the Mixed Choirs African category for their rendition of Lemoenliedjie.

These achievements reflect the dedication of learners, educators, conductors and support staff who have worked tirelessly to prepare for the national competition. They also underscore the value of arts education and co-curricular programmes in developing confidence, discipline, teamwork and leadership among learners.

Congratulations to all the learners, educators and schools for representing the province with distinction on the national stage.
