Western Cape makes strong showing at National Excellence Awards

The Western Cape received widespread recognition at the National Education Excellence Awards, with schools and districts earning top honours for outstanding performance in teaching and learning.

A highlight of the event was the Centre of Science and Technology (COSAT) in Khayelitsha being named South Africa’s top-performing Quintile 3 school. Accepting the award on behalf of the school, Principal Tiro Motaung said the achievement reflected the hard work and dedication of both teachers and learners. “We live by our motto: No excuses, just success!” he said. 

Other notable achievements included Bloemhof Girls' High School and Westerford High School securing second and third place respectively among Quintile 5 schools. Vredendal Secondary School was recognised for excellence in the upkeep and maintenance of school facilities.

At district level, Metro North Education District achieved second place for Participation versus Performance in Mathematics and third place in Physical Sciences. Cape Winelands Education District secured first place in Physical Sciences. Eden and Central Karoo Education District was recognised with first place for Excellence in District Leadership and Management. Metro Central Education District received first place for Excellence in District Support for Primary Learning Outcomes. 

Brenda Robertson, Director of the Metro Central Education District, described the recognition as a proud moment for the district. “This achievement reflects the unwavering commitment, collaboration and dedication of our schools, educators and district team in strengthening foundational learning and improving outcomes for every learner.”

The Western Cape Education Department was further honoured with a Special Ministerial Award for all its education districts achieving a National Senior Certificate pass rate above 80% in 2025.

Acting Provincial Minister for Education, Anton Bredell, congratulated the officials, principals, teachers and school staff who work under immense pressure every day to deliver on the department’s vision of quality education for every child, in every classroom, in every school in the Western Cape. “Their commitment to educational excellence continues to ensure that learners are provided with opportunities to achieve their full potential and contribute positively to society.”
