Western Cape learners shine at 2026 Eskom Expo Science Fairs

The Western Cape's brightest young scientific minds have been recognised for their outstanding achievements at the 2026 Eskom Expo Regional Science Fairs, with learners from across the province earning special awards for excellence in innovation, energy research, development-focused projects and scientific inquiry.

Held in Cape Town, Stellenbosch and on the West Coast, the regional fairs showcased hundreds of research projects developed by learners determined to find solutions to real-world challenges facing their communities and the broader world. The special award recipients stood out for their creativity, critical thinking and commitment to using science and technology to make a difference.

At the Cape Town Regional Science Fair, hosted at the University of Cape Town, several learners received prestigious Eskom-sponsored awards. Aimee Levy and Mia Braun from Herzlia High School were named Best Female winners, while Veer Atwaru and Luan Odendaal from Parklands College received the Best Energy Project Award. The Best Innovation Award went to Aidan Fahy and Felix Lorentz from International School of Cape Town.

On the West Coast, learners impressed judges with projects that reflected both scientific excellence and community impact. Daniela Dixon from Hopefield High School was recognised as Best Female, while Andrew de Boer from Curro Langebaan received the Best Energy Project Award. The Best Innovation Award was given to Carel van Niekerk from Piketberg High School, and Jesmine Linnert from Jurie Hayes Primary School earned the Best Development Project Award.

The Stellenbosch Regional Science Fair also produced exceptional winners. Yu-Yao Chen from Curro Durbanville received the Best Female Award, while fellow learner Liam Foxfort also from Curro Durbanville was awarded Best Energy Project. The Best Innovation Award was presented to Daniel Lutz from Paul Roos Gymnasium, and Cullen Fillies and Kieran Leander from Protea Heights Academy were recognised for the Best Development Project.

These achievements highlight the remarkable talent, curiosity and innovation emerging from schools across the Western Cape. Through their research and determination, these young innovators are not only advancing scientific knowledge but also demonstrating the vital role that science, technology and critical thinking play in shaping a sustainable future for South Africa.
