Unleashing the Tech Titans
Unleashing the Tech Titans
16 February 2026
On Valentine's Day 2026, the Cape Academy for Mathematics, Science and Technology (CAMST) hosted the Growth for Jobs (G4J): Drone Future Labs and Tech Titans Game Launch, bringing together 260 high school learners from 10 schools across the Western Cape.
The day began with a keynote address from Jo Ann Johnston, Head of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, who emphasised that the future belongs to those who build critical skills. Her message set the tone for an event focused on preparing young people for emerging opportunities in the digital and technology driven economy. To support this, DEDAT introduced its newly developed Tech Titans career card game, giving learners a practical and interactive way to connect tech related roles with real economic pathways.
Industry and higher education partners were a strong presence throughout the programme. FEENIX Drone Academy, the Sakhikamva Foundation, SHEEN Robotics, FNB, the University of the Western Cape, the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and other partners spent the day engaging with learners and offering insights into study options, career trajectories and the technologies shaping the future.
The heart of the event was the immersive learning experience. Learners flew drones, worked in teams and built confidence across four practical modules designed to develop problem solving, collaboration and real time decision making. From the high energy drone arena to the strategic gameplay of Tech Titans, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement and discovery.
CAMST was a fitting venue for the programme. Principal Angie Naidu led a tour of the school’s aviation and robotics rooms, showcasing facilities that reflect the school’s commitment to future ready learning. The school offers Aviation as an additional subject, and Naidu noted that their Aviation Programme continues to set the school apart, with learner cadet pilots achieving their private pilot licences before they can even drive a car.
The day concluded with closing remarks from Ashric Don, Deputy Chief Education Specialist for Coding and Robotics at the WCED, who highlighted the importance of creating opportunities that not only inspire learners but equip them with tangible skills and confidence.
