Tygerberg High learners shine on Constitutional Court stage
5 October 2026
Two Western Cape learners have earned national recognition after finishing as runners-up in the 2026 National Schools Moot Court Competition.
Lesedi Nakedi and Mica’h Arendse of Tygerberg High School advanced to the Grand Finale of the 15th annual National Schools Moot Court Programme, held at the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg on 4 October 2026.
The Western Cape was represented at the competition by learners from Desmond Mpilo Tutu Secondary School, New Orleans Secondary School, Norman Henshilwood High School and Tygerberg High School. The Tygerberg duo was one of only four teams selected for the national finals, alongside teams from the Eastern Cape and Limpopo.
Hosted by the South African Human Rights Commission in partnership with the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, the competition challenged learners to argue a constitutional case on whether schools may restrict access to social media during school hours to protect learners from online harms such as cyberbullying and exploitation.
Appearing for the Applicants, Lesedi and Mica’h argued before a bench comprising judges of the Constitutional Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and High Courts. Their outstanding performance earned them a runner-up finish after a closely contested final.
The achievement reflects months of dedication, research and preparation, and highlights the talent and critical-thinking skills of Western Cape learners.
The Western Cape Education Department congratulates Lesedi and Mica’h on their exceptional achievement and for representing the province with distinction on the national stage.
