STEM in action!

13 June 2025

Talented learners from across the Cape Winelands Education District recently immersed themselves in hands-on activities, interactive sessions and inspiring talks that ignited their passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The Grade 9 STEM Boot Camp at Ceres Secondary School was attended by learners from the host school, as well as Esselenpark Secondary, Klein Nederburg Secondary, New Orleans Secondary, Wellington Secondary and Jakes Gerwel Technical High School.

The camp kicked off with an inspiring address by Noel Petersen, District Director, who emphasised the critical role of STEM education in shaping future careers and fostering innovation-led communities. This set the tone for a weekend of discovery, creativity and problem-solving.

Sheen Technologies, a Cape Town-based company specialising in coding and robotics, led engaging sessions that blended industry insights with practical activities. The Cape Town Science Centre added a touch of wonder with vibrant scientific demonstrations and experiments, keeping learners engaged and curious.

Learners participated in exciting hands-on challenges, designing and building a rafter prototype and a Smart Bin that they coded and automated using a micro bit. These activities tested their creativity, problem-solving skills and knowledge of key subjects like Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology.

Inspiring talks from industry experts, the district's Life Orientation Subject Advisor and educators motivated learners to pursue their passions and consider the long-term impact of their academic and career choices. A motivational speech by a University of the Western Cape delegate emphasised the importance of education, innovation and perseverance.

The Grade 9 STEM Boot Camp was a resounding success, thanks to the collective effort of Western Cape Education Department officials, teachers, support staff and presenters. This memorable experience empowered young minds, affirming the Cape Winelands Education District's commitment to nurturing the next generation of STEM leaders.
