Stellenbosch learner to showcase innovation at Global Science Olympiad

2 December 2025

Wium van Niekerk, a Grade 10 learner at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch, will represent South Africa at the World Innovative Science Project Olympiad (WISPO) in Bali, Indonesia from 10 – 13 December 2025.

His award-winning research explores the use of lavender oil as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical fungicides in citrus production, with results showing comparable effectiveness to conventional treatments.

Van Niekerk joins three other South African gold medalists from the Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF): Dzunisa Chauke (Khanyisa Education Centre, Mopani), Milla Vorster (Curro Durbanville) and Ismaail (Miles) Hassen (Greenside High School, Johannesburg).

The team will travel under the guidance of delegation leader Jane Wasonga, Eskom Expo Johannesburg Regional Science Fair Director.

The Olympiad, organised by the Indonesia Scientific Society (ISS), is an annual international science fair that brings together young scientists from around the world to showcase their research, innovation and scientific projects.

Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said: “South Africa proudly sends four exceptional learners to the International Science Fair in Indonesia. We congratulate them for their curiosity, dedication, and innovative spirit, and wish them every success as they showcase South African talent on the global stage. Their achievement reflects strong mentorship, community support, and the power of science education to transform lives. We urge schools, educators, and young people across the country to be inspired by their example, pursue STEMI opportunities, and collaborate boldly. Together, we can nurture future innovators who will solve local and global challenges. Good luck to our team, they truly make us proud.”

Western Cape Education Minister, David Maynier, added: "We wish our learners the very best as they head off to the World Olympiad next week! International events like these showcase the outstanding scientific talent we have in our province, and drive interest in the scientific fields that are vital to economic growth. We encourage all of our learners to take up these opportunities to develop their skills and represent our province and country in STEM fields!"
