Robben Island Freedom Day camp: Honouring the past, inspiring the future

30 April 2026

The Robben Island Freedom Day Camp brought together 30 learners from schools across the Western Cape to experience one of South Africa’s most powerful historical sites. The camp offered a journey into the heart of the country’s struggle for freedom and democracy, with the aim to educate and inspire the next generation of leaders.

Learners from Soneike High, Cedar High, Makupula High, Rocklands High, Protea Heights Academy, Kayamandi High and Sea Point High participated in this unique programme.

One of the most impactful elements of the camp was a historical simulation of prison conditions on Robben Island. Learners were briefly exposed to the harsh realities endured by political prisoners, fostering a deeper emotional understanding of the sacrifices made by struggle heroes. This immersive experience left a lasting impression, bridging the gap between historical knowledge and lived empathy.

A highlight of the programme was a guided tour led by former political prisoner Sisuluo Mutsi. His firsthand accounts gave learners a direct connection to history, transforming abstract lessons into vivid, emotional realities. Listening to his experiences cultivated a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the freedom South Africans enjoy today.

The success of the camp was made possible through the collaboration of educators, organisers, tour guides, Robben Island Museum representatives and former political prisoners. Together, they created an environment where history was not only taught but felt—an experience that will resonate with learners long after the camp.
