Rising stars poised for glory as Western Cape defends national title

Spectators can look forward to standout performances by Western Cape athletes at the National Primary Schools Athletics Championship at Green Point Stadium on 20 and 21 March 2026.

The province’s young athletes will defend their title as two time champions, with the home soil advantage providing added incentive.

Scintillating performances at the Western Cape Primary Schools Championships at Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch on Saturday, 7 March 2026, raised expectations for what’s to come. Among the athletes who delivered top tier results were Nianke Fourie, who achieved 5.51 m in the U12 long jump; Silke Aucamp, who completed the U13 800 m in 2:14.96; Tayrin Jacobs, who finished the U13 1500 m walk in 07:40.99; and Luan Du Toit, who recorded 6.16 m in the U13 long jump.

Tayrin, a learner at Watsonia Primary School, received the trophy for the best U13 athlete, while Luan, a learner at Hoërskool Bonnievale, was named the best field athlete of the day.

Through collaborative efforts between World Wide Scholarships (WWS) and Western Cape Schools Athletics, the event was streamed on television, with an impressive 12,844 viewers tuning in to witness the outstanding performances.

Brandon Du Plessis, Chairperson of the Western Cape Schools Athletics Association, said the Western Cape is extremely excited to be the host of the national event. “This will give us an opportunity to showcase our athletes’ talents on home soil and witness the birth of the next generation of Olympians.  Athletes and educators from all education districts in the Western Cape form part of the team and this is made possible by the commitment of the Western Cape Government towards school sport.”
