Provincial Skills Competition showcases excellence in Technical Education

The Western Cape's future artisans, technicians and innovators showcased their talents at the 2026 Provincial Skills Competition, held on 28 and 29 August 2026 at Bellville Technical High School.
The event brought together 280 learners and 70 teachers from across the province who competed in 14 disciplines spanning a wide range of technical and vocational fields. These included Automotive, Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD), Computer Aided Drawings (CAD), Consumer and Hospitality Studies, Digital Electronics, Digital Fabrication, Design, Electronics, Power Systems, Construction, Civil Service, Woodworking, Fitting and Machining, and Welding and Metalwork.
Nathan Joseph, Senior Curriculum Planner: Electrical and Mechanical Technology, said the competition once again provided a valuable platform for learners and teachers to demonstrate their technical knowledge, practical expertise, creativity and problem-solving abilities. “More importantly, it contributes to our ongoing efforts to promote skills and technology subjects as viable first-choice career options for learners in the Western Cape.”
One of the highlights of the competition is the opportunity it creates for top performers to represent the province on a national stage. Provincial winners, including the first- and second-place learners in each discipline, as well as the first-place teacher, have qualified to participate in the National Skills Competition, which will take place in Johannesburg on 1 and 2 October 2026. Western Cape teams will compete in 11 disciplines as they take on the country's best young talent.
Joseph said the successful hosting of the Provincial Skills Competition would not have been possible without the commitment and support of the participating schools, learners, teachers, officials, judges, sponsors and other stakeholders. “Their collective efforts ensured a professionally organised event that celebrated excellence in technical and vocational education.”
The competition was a powerful reflection of the talent, dedication and potential within the Western Cape's technical and vocational education sector. As preparations begin for the national competition, we wish our provincial representatives every success and look forward to seeing them continue to excel on the national stage.
