Pelican Park high celebrated for energy efficiency

Pelican Park High School has been recognised as the winner of the City of Cape Town’s Energy Efficiency Schools Programme, earning first place and a R15 000 heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) voucher.

The competition formed part of the Cape Town Future Energy Festival and challenged learners from nine high schools across the metro to create innovative posters promoting practical energy-saving and sustainable living practices. Groenvlei High School secured second place and received a R5 000 stationery voucher, while Vista Nova High School finished third, earning a R3 000 stationery voucher.

Hosted during Youth Month, the programme aimed to empower young people with knowledge and skills to address energy challenges facing communities across South Africa. Through interactive workshops and engaging activities, learners explored ways to promote energy efficiency and sustainability, while identifying practical solutions that households can use to reduce electricity consumption and lower monthly costs.

The initiative highlights the important role that young people can play in shaping a more sustainable future and raising awareness about responsible energy use within their schools, homes and communities.

Congratulating the participating schools, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Xanthea Limberg, said: “The leaders of tomorrow are the young people who choose today to care about their communities, their environment, and their future. Congratulations to every school that participated in the Energy Efficiency Schools Programme. Thank you for your passion, your commitment, and your willingness to be part of building a brighter future for Cape Town.”

The Western Cape Education Department congratulates Pelican Park High School, Groenvlei High School and Vista Nova High School on their achievements and commends all participating learners for their creativity, environmental awareness and commitment to building a sustainable future.
