New School Sport Strategy launched

10 February 2026

The Western Cape Government has launched a new School Sport Strategy, supported by R130 million over three years, to help more learners take part in sport and develop their talents.

The launch took place on 10 February 2026 at the Lavender Hill Shared Facility. It was led by Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Ricardo Mackenzie, together with Provincial Minister of Education David Maynier, National Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube, community leaders, and private sector partners.

This new Strategy aims to make school sport better organised, easier to access, and a stronger pathway for young people to grow — from fun games on the playground to competing at provincial, national, and international levels.

Minister Mackenzie said the Strategy is about connecting young talent with real opportunities. “School sport is not an event - it is a pathway. This Strategy ensures that talent, regardless of where a learner comes from, is identified, supported, and given room to grow. When we remove barriers, we open doors for young people to reach their full potential.”

The Strategy also forms an important part of the Western Cape Safety Plan. By giving young people regular, structured sport, the plan helps keep them safe, active, and supported.

At the event, the Western Cape Government also celebrated the province’s athletes who were crowned overall champions at the 2025 South African National School Sport Championships, recognising their hard work and dedication.

Minister Maynier spoke about the positive impact of sport on learners, saying that sport builds confidence, resilience, and stronger engagement at school.

National Minister Gwarube welcomed the Strategy and praised the Western Cape Government for investing in school sport facilities, coaching, equipment, leagues, and learner participation programmes. She said the investment shows what is possible when learners’ full development is prioritised.

The launch of the Western Cape School Sport Strategy reinforces government’s commitment to safe access to sport and to creating strong pathways for learners to grow, achieve, and succeed.
