Neurodiverse Centre opens at Axios School of Skills

On 14 April 2026, a new Neurodiverse Centre was officially opened at the Axios School of Skills in Eerste River, marking an important milestone in the expansion of inclusive education in the Western Cape.

The school will support learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Profound Intellectual Disability (PID), building on its existing provision for learners with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. The centre will provide additional school places and strengthen support for learners awaiting placement and those attending other schools.

Developed through a collaborative effort between the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), the Departments of Social Development and Health and Wellness, and various non-profit organisation partners, the centre will serve as a resource hub, offering guidance and support to learners and schools across the surrounding community.

To make the centre a reality, previously unused classrooms at the school were refurbished with special education needs in mind, and the school was allocated additional specialist teaching posts to ensure appropriate, high-quality support for learners.

The WCED thanked Principal George Engelbrecht and his team for their commitment to inclusive education and for hosting an opening event that reflected the school’s welcoming and learner-centred approach.

This initiative demonstrates an effective model for optimising existing educational infrastructure to expand support services and highlights the important role schools can play in addressing the diverse learning needs within their local communities.
