Learners join rooibos space research project

Learners from seven schools in the Cederberg region will take part in a unique space science experiment when rooibos seeds are sent to the International Space Station in October.
Rooibos is an indigenous South African plant that grows naturally in the Cederberg region and is used to produce the popular herbal tea enjoyed around the world.
After being exposed to microgravity and space radiation, the seeds will be returned to Earth, where learners will compare their germination, growth, resilience and yield with control seeds. Parklands College will conduct a parallel study to provide additional data.
The initiative, led by the South African Rooibos Council (SARC) in partnership with MaxIQ Space and supported by the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), combines space science, agriculture and education. Working with local rooibos farmers, learners will collect and analyse data as part of a structured scientific investigation.
Learners across South Africa are also invited to design the official Rooibos in Space mission patch during July and August.
Tyler Louw, a Grade 7 learner at Sederberg Primary School, said he was looking forward to the opportunity to conduct research like a real scientist, ask questions, and find answers through investigation. His sentiments were echoed by classmate Jordan Goodheart, who hoped the project would inspire more learners to consider careers in science, engineering and space exploration.
Chloe Coetzee, a Grade 10 learner at Clanwilliam Secondary School, said she was excited to see the results of the experiment.
Véandré Arends-Jacobs, a Physical Sciences teacher at the school, said the staff and learners were proud to be part of the initiative. “Through this project, our learners are exposed to space science, research and innovation, while at the same time gaining a better understanding of the unique value of rooibos, for which our region is known worldwide. This sparks curiosity, inspires interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, and helps develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
“We believe that this experience will motivate our learners to dream big, explore new career opportunities, and proudly carry their local heritage with them as part of the global rooibos community.”
