Learner’s heartfelt tribute earns teacher top honour at National Teaching Awards

10 October 2025

The 25th annual National Teaching Awards was a celebration of excellence and transformative impact in education. Among the many inspiring moments, one stood out: Jade Amos, a learner from Belmor Primary School, had pride of place as the special guest of the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube.

Minister Gwarube extended an invitation to learners across the country to nominate a teacher they believed deserved the prestigious Minister’s Special Award. Jade’s moving nomination of her teacher, Charnelle Arendse, captured hearts and ultimately led to Mrs Arendse being named the winner of the Minister’s Special Award.

A seasoned educator and community champion, Mrs Arendse was previously recognised with a second-place award in the Excellence in Primary School Teaching category at the 2022 National Teaching Awards. Her continued dedication to her learners and her community has only grown stronger.

In her nomination, Jade described Mrs Arendse as “a barrier-breaking woman” and “a walking solution to all our problems”. She praised her teacher for changing the narrative of Hanover Park, an area often associated with gangsterism and violence, by creating a nurturing and empowering environment for learners.

Among Mrs Arendse’s many initiatives are:

  • The Care Closet – a space where children in need can choose beautiful clothing at no cost.
  • Sow-a-Sandwich – a project that provides sandwiches accompanied by inspirational quotes to uplift those facing hardship.
  • Sanitary Savvy – a programme ensuring girls have access to essential sanitary products.

Mrs Arendse’s work exemplifies the power of teaching beyond the classroom. Her commitment to holistic care and community upliftment is a beacon of hope and a model for educators nationwide.

Jade’s nomination reminded everyone of the profound impact a dedicated teacher can have on children’s academic outcomes and their lives.
