Learner showcases AI research globally
18 March 2026
Nicolaas Steenkamp, a Grade 11 learner at Stellenbosch High School, will represent South Africa at the International Festival of Engineering Science and Technology in Tunisia (I-FEST²).
Nicolaas will present his project, “Evaluating the impact of reinforcement strategies on learning efficiency and adaptability in Q-learning algorithms.” His research explores how different reinforcement strategies influence the learning performance of artificial intelligence systems, using a computational model trained to play the game Hexapawn.
He will join two fellow Eskom Expo medallists, Diya Zacaria from Potchefstroom and Nathan Moolman from Johannesburg, at the event from 23 to 29 March 2026. They were selected for their excellent research projects that address real-world challenges in education systems, aviation engineering and artificial intelligence (AI).
Mologadi Motshele, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation, said by presenting their research internationally, these learners contribute not only to international scientific dialogue, but also to the development of solutions that can support sustainable growth and technological progress across emerging economies.
Western Cape Minister of Education, David Maynier, said improving participation and performance in Mathematics and Science is a key priority for the province. “We will continue working to nurture an early interest in scientific fields as a key contributor to the economy.
“Congratulations to Nicolaas on this outstanding achievement! He has a bright future ahead of him, and we wish him all the best for the science festival in Tunis!”
Registration for the 2026 Eskom Expo is now open at www.exposcience.co.za.
